All about Sinusitis.

The word sinusitis (sinus = bosom, ite = inflammation) means inflammation of the sinuses, also called sinuses. It is very difficult to speak of sinusitis without speaking of rhinitis. Sinusitis is the most common complication of allergic rhinitis. Therefore, the name used by the experts is: Rhinosinusitis.

What are the sinuses?

Sinuses (or sinuses) are hollow and aeradas cavities in the bones of the face and that serve to:
1) resound the voice
2) balance the weight of the head
3) assist air circulation and elimination of secretions
4) assist the nose on their roles.
The mucous that coats the sinuses is very similar to the lining of the nose. Therefore it is so easy that nasal inflammation spreads until sinuses.

What are Sinuses?

Sinuses lead the names of the bones where are situated: breasts jaws, front, etmoidais and esfenoidais.

How is sinusitis?

Sinusitis is the result of the action of a microorganism (bacterium may be, viruses or fungus) or allergy, which penetrates in the sinuses, causes inflammation and secretion, which is retained, obstructing the air circulation spaces and causing the symptoms. In General a framework nasal (cold, flu or allergy) precedes sinusitis. Although it is a situation more rare, sinusitis can also result from other diseases, dental problems, etc. Pregnant women may have greater predisposition to colds, rhinitis and sinusitis.

What are the symptoms of sinusitis?

Symptoms vary in each case. In acute sinusitis (recent start) is common headache (headache), nasal congestion, catarrhal aspect secretion or even purulent, discomfort and even fever. Some people complain of odour to breathe and feeling of run-off ADH behind the nostrils.

In chronic sinusitis (long-standing) and repeated, headache, fever and the phlegm may or may not be present. In these cases, the cough, dry and with night and worsens upon awakening in the morning, is the most common symptom, particularly in children.
Many children who have only with cough syrups are handled, not improve, but in reality are carriers of sinusitis and require specific treatment.

How to interpret a RX?

The simple radiography of the sinuses is a simple way to confirm the diagnosis of sinusitis. But, this examination must be interpreted with great care and always related to the patient's symptoms. There are some images that might confuse the doctor taking thinking that is sinusitis, allergic in particular and not treatment. For example, a thickening of the breasts JAWS can be discreet and result of allergy repeated and chronic. However the same thickening, depending on the aspect can be significant disease.

Computed tomography of the sinuses is able to show more detail and targeting therapeutic choice.

How to treat sinusitis?

In lighter, antiallergenic cases associated with decongestants are useful for control of symptoms. Nasal Washes with saline solution can assist in the improvement.

Although there is the nasal obstruction, do not recommend the use of nasal drops – if there is no other way, using a maximum of 4 to 5 days. The most intense and demonstrated infectious will benefit from using antibiotics, by long time – no less than 15 days. Passed the crisis, it is essential to treat rhinitis and allergy through immunotherapy (allergy vaccines for) The environmental controls at home against dust mites from home will also contribute greatly to the improvement of the patient.

If the person does not correct the living environment with dust, humidity, carpeting, rugs, curtains, books and stuffed animals are more prone to rhinosinusitis. Annoying Factors acting on nasisinusal inflamed mucosa may worsen the problem, e.g., air-cooled and fan without conservation, cigarette smoke, etc.

Sinusitis repeated should be evaluated on the need for surgical procedure, in particular in cases where there are other conditions attached, e.g. poliposes, accented deviations of septum or in case of anatomical variants.

How to prevent sinusitis?

The best way to prevent sinusitis is to address the factors that may predispose to your appearance. The Allergist will examine their clinical data and will judge the need for treatment of allergic rhinitis, thus preventing the rhinosinusitis if install and/or become chronic.
